Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
Filling
- 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1/4 cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped
- 2 tablespoons fresh basil, finely chopped
Additional
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup.
- Prepare the puff pastry: Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface to prevent sticking. Brush lightly with olive oil to add flavor and assist browning.
- Add the filling: Evenly sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese across the pastry surface, then add the chopped sun-dried tomatoes and finely chopped fresh basil. Season lightly with salt and pepper to taste.
- Roll and slice: Starting from one edge, carefully roll the pastry into a tight log, ensuring the filling stays inside. Then, slice the log into 1/2-inch thick rounds to form pinwheels.
- Prepare for baking: Place the pinwheels onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart. Brush the tops with the beaten egg to give them a golden glossy finish when baked.
- Bake and serve: Bake the pinwheels for 15 to 18 minutes or until they are puffed up and golden brown. Allow them to cool slightly before serving to ensure the cheese sets and they are easy to handle.
Notes
- Gruyère cheese can be substituted with sharp cheddar or goat cheese for variation in flavor.
- For a meatier appetizer, add chopped prosciutto or crumbled cooked bacon before rolling the pastry.
