Ingredients
Scale
Sausage Gravy
- 1 pound breakfast sausage (mild or spicy)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Pie Assembly
- 1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough (8 biscuits)
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- Chopped chives or parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare dish: Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or deep-dish skillet to prevent sticking during baking.
- Cook sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and crumbled. Do not drain the fat to maintain flavor and moisture.
- Make gravy: Sprinkle the flour evenly over the cooked sausage and stir constantly for 1–2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste and coat the sausage well.
- Add milk and seasonings: Slowly whisk in the whole milk, continuing to stir frequently until the mixture thickens into a creamy gravy, about 5–7 minutes. Stir in black pepper, salt, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper flakes if using. Remove from heat once thickened.
- Assemble pie: Pour the prepared sausage gravy into the greased pie dish. Separate the biscuit dough and arrange the raw biscuits on top of the gravy, slightly overlapping as needed.
- Add cheese: If using, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the biscuits before baking.
- Bake: Place the pie in the oven and bake for 20–25 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
- Cool and garnish: Remove from oven and let the pie cool for 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped chives or parsley if desired, then serve warm.
Notes
- You can prepare the sausage gravy in advance and assemble the pie right before baking for convenience.
- For a homemade touch, use your own biscuit dough recipe instead of refrigerated dough.
- Serve this pie alongside eggs or a fresh fruit salad for a complete breakfast or brunch.
