Description

A comforting Southern-inspired breakfast pie featuring savory sausage gravy baked beneath golden, fluffy biscuits. This easy-to-make dish combines rich, creamy sausage gravy with biscuit dough and optional cheddar cheese for a delicious brunch or breakfast centerpiece.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Gravy

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage (mild or spicy)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Pie Assembly

  • 1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough (8 biscuits)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • Chopped chives or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare dish: Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or deep-dish skillet to prevent sticking during baking.
  2. Cook sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and crumbled. Do not drain the fat to maintain flavor and moisture.
  3. Make gravy: Sprinkle the flour evenly over the cooked sausage and stir constantly for 1–2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste and coat the sausage well.
  4. Add milk and seasonings: Slowly whisk in the whole milk, continuing to stir frequently until the mixture thickens into a creamy gravy, about 5–7 minutes. Stir in black pepper, salt, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper flakes if using. Remove from heat once thickened.
  5. Assemble pie: Pour the prepared sausage gravy into the greased pie dish. Separate the biscuit dough and arrange the raw biscuits on top of the gravy, slightly overlapping as needed.
  6. Add cheese: If using, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the biscuits before baking.
  7. Bake: Place the pie in the oven and bake for 20–25 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
  8. Cool and garnish: Remove from oven and let the pie cool for 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped chives or parsley if desired, then serve warm.

Notes

  • You can prepare the sausage gravy in advance and assemble the pie right before baking for convenience.
  • For a homemade touch, use your own biscuit dough recipe instead of refrigerated dough.
  • Serve this pie alongside eggs or a fresh fruit salad for a complete breakfast or brunch.
