Description

This Pizza Grilled Cheese Sandwich combines the comforting flavors of classic grilled cheese with the savory taste of a pepperoni pizza. Featuring melted mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, zesty pizza sauce, and crispy pepperoni layered between buttery toasted bread, this easy stovetop recipe is perfect for a quick lunch or a satisfying snack. Serve it warm with extra pizza sauce for dipping to enjoy a gooey, flavorful treat that the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Butter

  • 4 slices of bread (sourdough or white)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (softened)

Cheese

  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Pizza Toppings

  • 1/4 cup pizza sauce (plus more for dipping)
  • 12 slices pepperoni or turkey pepperoni
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread: Spread butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread to ensure a golden, crispy crust when cooking.
  2. Heat skillet and arrange bread: Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, onto a skillet or griddle heated over medium heat to start browning.
  3. Add pizza sauce: Spread about 2 tablespoons of pizza sauce evenly over each slice of bread on the skillet to infuse flavor.
  4. Layer cheeses and toppings: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan over the sauce, then season with dried oregano and garlic powder. Layer 6 slices of pepperoni on each sandwich to add savory richness.
  5. Top with remaining bread slices: Place the remaining bread slices on top, buttered side facing up, to form complete sandwiches.
  6. Cook first side: Let the sandwich cook for 2–3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crisp.
  7. Flip and cook second side: Carefully flip the sandwich over and cook for another 2–3 minutes, pressing gently with a spatula to encourage even melting of cheese and crisping of the bread.
  8. Rest and serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and allow them to rest for 1 minute before slicing. Serve warm with extra pizza sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • For a heartier sandwich, add sliced olives, bell peppers, or cooked sausage.
  • To make it vegetarian, omit the pepperoni or substitute with plant-based alternatives.
  • If you don’t have pizza sauce on hand, marinara sauce makes a great substitute.
