Description

A delicious and comforting Pear Apple Cheddar Caramelized Onion Grilled Cheese Bagel Sandwich that combines sweet and savory flavors. This sandwich features caramelized onions, sharp white cheddar, and thinly sliced pear and apple, all layered between toasted bagel halves spread with Dijon mustard and grilled to golden perfection. Perfect for a hearty lunch or a cozy fall meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Bagels and Butter

  • 2 plain or everything bagels, halved
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • Extra butter for grilling

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Filling

  • 1 small pear, thinly sliced
  • 1 small apple, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices sharp white cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium-low heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter along with the olive oil. Add the thinly sliced onions and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook slowly for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions turn soft, golden brown, and caramelized. Once done, set aside.
  2. Prepare the Bagels: Preheat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat. Spread Dijon mustard on the cut side of each bagel half if using.
  3. Assemble the Sandwiches: On the bottom half of each bagel, layer slices of sharp white cheddar cheese, followed by thinly sliced pear and apple. Add a spoonful of the caramelized onions on top, then add another layer of cheddar cheese, and finally place the top half of the bagel over the filling.
  4. Grill the Sandwiches: Lightly butter the outside of each assembled bagel sandwich. Place them in the preheated skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula to flatten slightly. Continue cooking until the cheese melts fully and the bagels are golden brown and crisp on both sides.
  5. Serve: Remove from the skillet, slice the sandwiches in half, and serve warm for a satisfying meal.

Notes

  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apple varieties for extra flavor depth.
  • A splash of balsamic glaze on the caramelized onions adds a tangy touch.
  • This recipe works great with cinnamon raisin bagels for a sweet-savory twist.
