Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
Cookie Dough
- ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup sour cream
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Frosting
- ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 ½ cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2–3 tbsp milk
- Food coloring (optional)
- Sprinkles for decorating
Instructions
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until evenly combined.
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together using an electric mixer or by hand until the mixture is light and fluffy, which should take about 3-4 minutes.
- Add Eggs and Flavorings: Beat in the eggs one at a time to ensure they incorporate smoothly, then mix in the sour cream and vanilla extract until the mixture is uniform.
- Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing slowly until just combined, being careful not to overmix to keep the dough tender.
- Chill the Dough: Cover the dough tightly and refrigerate it for at least 1 hour to ease handling and enhance texture.
- Prepare for Baking: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Shape and Bake Cookies: Roll the chilled dough into balls, flatten each slightly with your hand or a utensil, and place them on the baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, being careful not to overbake to maintain softness.
- Cool the Cookies: Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.
- Make the Frosting: Beat the softened butter in a bowl until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract while beating to create a smooth frosting. Add food coloring if desired, and mix until evenly tinted.
- Frost and Decorate: Spread or pipe the frosting onto the cooled cookies and decorate with sprinkles as desired. Allow the frosting to set before serving.
Notes
- Ensure the butter is properly softened for best creaming results.
- Do not overbake the cookies to maintain their soft, tender texture.
- Refrigerating the dough helps with rolling and prevents spreading during baking.
- Adjust milk in frosting for desired consistency; add more for thinner frosting.
- Customize frosting colors with food coloring and add sprinkles for festive presentation.
