Description

Refreshing Grapefruit Orange Sangria combining crisp Riesling wine with fresh citrus fruits and mint leaves, sweetened with homemade simple syrup and topped with a splash of club soda. Perfect for a chilled, fruity cocktail to enjoy during warm weather or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Simple Syrup

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water

Sangria

  • 1 bottle Riesling wine (750ml)
  • 12 – 15 mint leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup (prepared as above)
  • 2 ripe grapefruits
  • 2 ripe oranges
  • 2 limes
  • Club soda, to top off

Instructions

  1. Prepare Simple Syrup: In a small pot, combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water. Bring to a full boil while stirring well to dissolve the sugar, then remove from heat and let it cool completely.
  2. Prepare the Fruit: Slice or chunk the grapefruits, oranges, and limes into pieces that easily fit inside your carafe or pitcher, ensuring they can be easily removed when pouring the sangria.
  3. Layer Fruit and Mint: Add a few pieces of grapefruit, orange, and several mint leaves into the carafe. To release the mint’s flavor, gently muddle the leaves before adding.
  4. Repeat Layering: Continue layering grapefruit, orange, and mint until the carafe is about half full with fruit and herbs.
  5. Add Sweetener and Wine: Pour 2 tablespoons of the cooled simple syrup over the fruit. Then, add the Riesling wine, filling the carafe nearly to the top while leaving room for stirring.
  6. Chill and Marinate: Place the filled carafe in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 hours, allowing the flavors to meld. Stir gently every 30 minutes to blend the tastes.
  7. Adjust Sweetness and Serve: Taste the sangria after chilling, and add more simple syrup if desired. Pour the sangria into individual glasses, top off each with a splash of club soda for effervescence, and garnish with extra mint leaves.

Notes

  • The simple syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks for future use.
  • Adjust the sweetness to your preference by adding more or less simple syrup.
  • For a less sweet sangria, reduce the sugar in the simple syrup or omit extra additions.
  • Using fresh ripe fruit ensures better flavor and aroma.
  • Chilling allows the citrus flavors and mint to infuse the wine fully.
