Description

This Classic Round Steak & Gravy recipe delivers tender, flavorful round steak cooked to perfection with savory onion gravy, mushrooms, and garlic. Adaptable for Instant Pot, Crock Pot, or Oven methods, this hearty dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes or rice for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat

  • 4 to 6 slices of round steak (approximately 2 lbs)

Gravy

  • 2 pouches onion gravy mix
  • 2 cups hot water

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 cups diced mushrooms
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed

Fats

  • 2 tbsp butter, divided

Instructions

  1. Sauté Aromatics: Set the Instant Pot to sauté mode. Add 1 tablespoon of butter, then sauté the sliced onions, smashed garlic cloves, and diced mushrooms until the mushrooms are golden and tender, releasing their rich flavor.
  2. Add Steak and Gravy: Place the round steak slices into the Instant Pot with the sautéed vegetables. In a separate bowl, dissolve the 2 pouches of onion gravy mix in 2 cups of hot water and pour this mixture over the steak and vegetables evenly.
  3. Pressure Cook: Seal the Instant Pot lid and set the cooking mode to “Meat” or “High Pressure” for 20 minutes. After cooking, carefully release the steam before opening the lid.
  4. Alternative Crock Pot Method: Combine all ingredients in the slow cooker, then cook on low heat for 8 hours until the steak is tender and infused with the gravy flavors.
  5. Alternative Oven Method: Place all ingredients into a covered roasting pan. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 2 to 2.5 hours until the meat is fork-tender and the flavors are well blended.
  6. Serve: Spoon the steak and gravy onto plates and enjoy with your favorite sides such as mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.

Notes

  • Using round steak slices roughly 1/2 inch thick ensures they cook evenly and remain tender.
  • Sautéing the vegetables before pressure cooking enhances the flavor of the gravy and steak.
  • You can adjust the gravy consistency by adding more water or thickening it with a cornstarch slurry after cooking.
  • For added richness, stir in the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter at the end of cooking.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
