Description

Cheesy Onion Crisps are deliciously crispy baked snacks made with thinly sliced onions, sharp cheddar, Parmesan cheese, and crunchy panko breadcrumbs. These savory appetizers are easy to prepare and perfect for parties or a tasty snack, boasting a golden brown, cheesy crust with just the right amount of seasoning.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  2. Prepare Onion Mixture: In a large bowl, toss the thinly sliced onions with all-purpose flour to coat evenly. This helps bind the ingredients together.
  3. Add Cheese and Seasonings: Add the shredded sharp cheddar, grated Parmesan, panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to the bowl. Drizzle melted butter over everything and mix well until fully combined.
  4. Form Crisps: Scoop heaping tablespoons of the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Flatten each slightly into small mounds and leave space between each mound to allow for spreading during baking.
  5. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 18–22 minutes until the crisps turn golden brown and the edges become crisp.
  6. Cool and Serve: Let the crisps cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Optionally, garnish with chopped fresh parsley. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, broil the crisps for an additional 1–2 minutes at the end of baking but watch carefully to avoid burning.
  • These crisps are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • You can substitute panko breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs to make this recipe gluten-free.
  • Adding a pinch of smoked paprika or cayenne pepper can add a nice smoky or spicy kick.
